A Place to Play and Serve
It was a perfect spring day — 13 months after we first closed our doors due to the pandemic — for families and their young children to get outdoors for some time to play together in the great outdoors, and begin to experience what post-pandemic life might feel like.
Play Together featured activities to get kids moving, including hip hop dance, Bubble Soccer, backyard games, a climbing wall, water balloon toss and a gardening activity. Three separate time slots were available for groups of 100 people each to gather at the Wayne Y for what was our first event since October 2019. While certainly different from previous events with capacity restrictions, health screenings and face masks, children and their families had fun being active together.
While the young children actively played outdoors with their family, a group of over 100 adults, middle schoolers and teens came together to package emergency food boxes in support of the nearly 200 families still receiving food assistance due to the economic impact of the Pandemic on their households. The event, called Serve Together, brought together over 100 volunteers who packed 750 food boxes. Each box was filled with nutritious meals to feed a family of four for two weeks.
As the widespread impact of the pandemic lingers for many, opportunities for physical activity and health eating are as important (if not more) as ever.
