A Season of Thanks, and Dogged Persistence

1the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people.  “He admired her dogged persistence in pursuing the job.”  “His persistence in asking for a raise was finally rewarded.”  “She has shown a lot of persistence.”

2the state of occurring or existing beyond the usual, expected, or normal time

Never has there been a time that the two essential meanings of a word applied simultaneously to a single situation.  As it relates to our “pivoted” NJHCN project, we have persisted (physically and emotionally) despite the constantly changing environment and needs in the community.  As it relates to The Pandemic – well, who would have thought we would STILL be dealing COVID-19 two years later!  But here we are, persisting despite a persisting Pandemic.

Over nineteen months of weekly food distribution we have seen the number of families needing food assistance go from a peak of 700+ families, to 200 consistent families, and since the summer anywhere from 65 to 100 families.  However, in recent months, inflation-driven price increases have driven our numbers back up as families look for ways to feed their families while still paying the bills.

Two days before Thanksgiving we distributed 163 holiday boxes to the families in our weekly food assistance program.  Thanks to our funding from the NJDOH through NJHCN and other funders, we were able to enhance these shelf-stable ”Thanksgiving Meal” boxes with fresh produce and a grocery store gift card to make for a complete family meal.  The families were exceptionally grateful!

And there is so much to be grateful for.  As we wind down year two of our grant, the Wayne Y would like to extend our deepest thanks to the NJHCN team, our coach Lisa Gulla, NJDOH, our community partners, funders and volunteers.  Thank you for your support during this challenging and unprecedented time, and thank you for the opportunity to make a difference in our community and the lives of so many families.

Nevertheless, WE ALL persisted!
