Annual Food Handlers Event
On Thursday, October 18th, Shaping Dover, a program of the Partnership, in collaboration with the Dover Health Department, conducted its Annual Food Handlers Event with all Dover restaurant owners and chefs. The main goal of this event was to provide knowledge and understanding of core food safety practices that every restaurant must follow. Susan Downer, Registered Environmental Health Specialist, prepared an overview presentation for those who work in restaurants and non-restaurant facilities on food safety issues, regulations, and techniques to maintain a food-safe setting.
Having all the restaurant owners and cooks gathered in one location, Carlos Caprioli, Program Manager of Shaping Dover, and Maria Solines, Program Assistant, had the opportunity to talk to them about a very important issue in the United States, overweight and obesity.
They talked about how we can make a difference in our community and how adding healthy food options to the menu could increase their clientele and income, while helping others lead a healthier lifestyle.
They invited everyone to participate in the Healthy Taste of Dover event which will highlight local restaurants which have agreed to add at least one healthy food option to their menus. Fabian Beltran, owner of the local TV channel “Town TV”, is helping Shaping Dover in promoting and advertising this event. The date is to be determined.
About the Grantee
Shaping Dover, a program of the Partnership for Maternal & Child Health of Northern NJ, is a community health initiative to improve the health of the people of Dover, New Jersey, by developing plans that focus on increasing physical activity and promoting healthy food choices. Our goal is to add healthy foods to the menus of restaurants and to encourage physical activities.
