Grantee Blog 2020

Back on track!

As we transition into the second half of 2020, we are grateful to be able to refocus our attention back to the 2020 Wellness Assessment.  COVID-19 greatly impeded our efforts during the first half of this year, but we are determined, ready, willing and able to get back on track and produce the Assessment as planned.

Over the past few weeks, we have been very successful in contacting several individuals that we feel will be key in the success of our endeavor.  We have decided to focus a section of the assessment on our special needs community, in addition to the expanding diversity in town that has become more apparent over the past few years, as originally discussed.

The individuals that we have contacted regarding the special needs community are people that have extensive experience with this population.  One of our greatest resources is the former director of the Special Young Adults organization, Anne Rotonda. In partnership with ARC, Anne and several other members of the community, formed the Nutley “SYA” in  1977.  She has been incredibly instrumental in providing a safe and nurturing environment for those in her program, as well as offer initiatives that assist with various types of continuing education, life skills, socialization and recreation.

We will primarily be looking into the needs of the “Over 21” population that appear to be severely overlooked once they age out of the education programs provided by the school district.  We are also speaking with parents and educators to assist us in forming the framework for the assessment.

This new direction has truly reinvigorated our team and reignited our desire to get this information out to the community so we can make some real change in the lives of those that truly need it.
