EZ Rides Funds Innovative Scotch Plains – Fanwood Schools Garden

EZ Ride, the Fanwood – Scotch Plains YMCA, and the Scotch Plains – Fanwood School District are continuing the trend of using new and revolutionary gardening methods to promote healthier eating for students by purchasing and installing a Cedar Keyhole Garden at Park Middle School. The raised bed garden is in the form of a U shape as shown in the photo with a cut out that grants the gardener easy access to plant and care for the all of the produce. The design helps people of all ages and abilities to easily garden as its shape and height eliminates the need to bend down and place stress on one’s knees.

The garden comes with an internal composter that basically has the garden “feeding” itself with recycled kitchen scraps and materials. The compost fertilizes and enriches the soil. This technique has been used in Northwest Africa where less nutritious soil and rainfall are present.

The garden is filled with layers of green materials and brown materials that decompose and turn into fertilizer. The layers help retain moisture and require less rainfall/water to sustain plants. After filling in the bottom portion of the raised bed with alternating layers of green and brown composting materials, the rest of the bed will be filled with mushroom soil and the garden crops. We look forward to seeing what the students will be growing and tasting in their new garden next Spring!
