Discovering a New Normal
On June 13th the Wayne YMCA launched its 2020 Summer Famer’s Market in Wayne Township’s Municipal Parking lot, marking another step forward as the community searches for a “new normal”.
Township official from both the Health and Parks and Recreation Departments worked with the Y to come up with a plan for safely operating the market during the pandemic. This year’s market has certain restrictions not observed previously. For example, the market has a designated entrance and exit, masks are required and capacity is monitored to insure social distancing. Our farmers and vendors are following all Health Department guidelines in their interactions with the community, and while the market has less of a community festival feel, participants have expressed gratitude for an alternative to the grocery store and an opportunity to get outside and engage in a more normalized activity with their family. Many participants have had a chance to see friends and neighbors for the first time since quarantining for months – one cannot underestimate the benefit and impact of returning to activities you enjoy on your mental health and outlook on life.
Now that market operations have been tried, tested and going well, we will begin the process of extending the market experience to those experiencing food insecurity in our community through a food voucher program and a system of transportation for those resident who cannot access the market on their own. We also look forward to reintroducing health education opportunities at the market as allowed.
