Focus in the Right Direction

With Club doors shuttered as of mid-March, part-time staff laid-off and schools closed indefinitely, the Boys & Girls Club of Clifton’s NJHCN focus was to provide virtual programming for children and families on topics concerning healthy eating and physical activity. However, responding to the deepening impact of COVID 19 and the guidance of our funder, Partners for Health Foundation, the Club redirected its focus to make access to healthy foods a priority. With community partners, such as New Jersey Community Foodbank, the Power of One, New Jersey Food and Clothing Rescue, and generous donations from T-Mobile, Fette Ford and individuals, the Club now distributes Family Food Packs every Friday, from Noon to 3:00 PM. The Club has made access to healthy food (20,000 lbs.), 1500 packs, available to over 810 families. Food packs include fresh carrots, potatoes, onions, apples and oranges, cereals, canned foods, mac and cheese, and sandwiches. We donate any remaining packs to senior housing in Clifton.  Food packs are assembled on Thursdays. On Fridays, Club staff, volunteers, Board members, Alumni and Keystone Club members place packs into car trunks. The line for food extends over a half mile. As one volunteer stated, “3,000 meals weekly, served proudly.”

We are grateful to all who have helped make this possible. Thank you.
