Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market Prepares for Opening on June 17 by Commemorating May as National Salad Month!
ISLES-In commemoration of National salad month, Isles harvested lettuce that was planted in planting plots located on the Greenwood Ave. Farmers market site in preparation for an amazing 5th season launching on June 17. Isles has a long history of outreach in the community and empowering Trenton through training young people in regards to the art of expanding urban gardening. Isles will premier as a vendor/community partner and grower at the Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market this year.
Norz Farms and Market-Debbie Norz and the Greenwood Ave. Market Manager attended NJ Health Department’s WIC & Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program’s training session. This year, the new Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market Manager, T.K. Oluwafemi also attended SNAP training at City Green as well as WIC and SFMNP training to ensure that all farms and growers will be able to not only able to welcome SNAP benefits for payment of fresh produce, but WIC and SFMNP vouchers as well so that all participants may enjoy a healthy salad this summer. For this 5th season, Greenwood Ave. will be able to empower the community who is eligible for the aforementioned benefits to maximize their buying power and accessibility to healthy food choices through matching dollar incentive programs. This year promises to be the largest year for participants to take advantage of healthy choices, healthy foods, and become a healthy community.
Capital Area YMCA’s Food Access Program-Khadijah McQueen’s work, Food Access Program Coordinator, brings a unique component of the Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market. The Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market serves as a site in the Summer Meals Program through the NJ Department of Agriculture. This month, the menu was chosen and approved for the children’s summer dinner meals which includes: fresh garden, cobb salad, and chicken Caesar salad meal bowls to promote healthy choices, healthy kids and healthy communities.
We are looking forward to celebrating the opening of our 5th season on June 17 from 12 to 5 on the corner of Greenwood Avenue and Hudson Avenue. June is National Fruit and Vegetable Month and we are hoping that the entire city of Trenton comes out to support their community Farmer’s Market by purchasing their fruit and vegetables at Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market.
