Health Education in a Box
As the Wayne YMCA’s 2020 Summer Famer’s Market in Wayne Township’s Municipal Parking lot has moved forward, capacity restrictions in place at the market have required us to curtail activities that would encourage gathering such as group exercise classes, large scale entertainment, children’s activities and the plans we made for weekly health education and screenings.
Rather than discontinuing altogether our health education efforts as part of our NJHCN grant with NJDOH, we pivoted (once again) to deliver “health education in a box”. As previously reported in our blog post, Responding to a Food Insecurity Crisis, the Wayne Y has been providing weekly direct food assistance to 200+ individuals and families negatively impact by the pandemic. These efforts have continued unabated as the lingering impact of the pandemic remains a stark reality for so many individuals and families. And now these weekly distribution days include health education information in the food assistance boxes
From mental health and COVID-19 resources, to nutrition education and recipes focused on how to use the shelf stable products and fresh fruits and vegetable provided, each week we are delivering health education in a safe and socially responsible manner during a pandemic.
