Healthy Communities Grant Impacts Caldwell

November 1st marks the end of our initial farmer’s market season with the City Green Mobile Veggie Farm Stand.  We are grateful that the grant has afforded us the opportunity to provide fresh fruits and vegetable to our community.  This season we have had everything from sunflowers, peaches and blueberries to winter squash, apples and sun chokes.  Our clients were happy to obtain familiar produce, but were also delighted to be introduced to new items to enhance their pathway to a healthier lifestyle.

We anticipated that the grant would make a difference in the lives of members of our neighborhood; but, we did not anticipate the enduring impact it would have. Seniors felt empowered by sharing their heritage with family recipes by using the featured produce of the week. As we gathered by the City Green Mobile Veggie Farm Stand, seniors shared their recipes with young families bridging a generation gap.

The market may be ending; but there is a new beginning for us in Caldwell. The Mobile Veggie Farm Stand Coordinator, Kim Cupo, who was such an integral part of our efforts, has been asked to stay on at the Food Pantry until the Veggie Truck returns again next year.  She will continue her work to benefit those who are food insecure.    We are pleased and grateful for her kindness and the impact she has made on our community.

We now look to the future and our next Farmer’s Market season. This year over 200 people enjoyed the market.  We look forward to reaching even more people next year.

This program is sponsored by the Caldwell Health Department in conjunction with the New Jersey Healthy Communities Network and is funded by a grant from the Partners for Health Foundation, whose vision is to make our communities healthier, better places to live.
