Healthy Futures Start Here

Young members of the Boys & Girls Club of Clifton’s Early Childhood department are learning about healthy eating habits as part of their overall early childhood education focused on reducing obesity and increasing active living.  With partnerships from the Clifton Health Department, City Green, and Montclair State University, our youngest members planted fruits and vegetables from seedlings, made delicious strawberry radish salsa, and took field trips to local farms. Early Childhood teachers were trained in delivering a curriculum, which included preschool garden activities and lesson plans. City Green’s “Veggie Mobile” visited the Club to provide students and their families with the experience of shopping at a mobile farmer’s market. Youngsters “purchased” a freshly picked carrot with their “City Green Buck.”  An early childhood teacher remarked that one of her students took her carrot home and she and her mother prepared it for the next day’s school snack. Little steps, big impact.
