Helping Franklin Seniors Grow and Improve Their Health
The Sussex County Division of Senior Services began their journey to improve the health of the seniors of Franklin Borough through a collaboration with the Forward Franklin Alliance. The Forward Franklin Alliance is a community revitalization partnership between the North Jersey Health Collaborative, Atlantic Health System and the Sussex County Department of Health and Human Services. This collaboration has begun with working with children and community members to create a community garden located at the Franklin Senior Center. On April 22, 2018, in recognition of Earth Day, The Division of Senior Services participated in the Franklin Borough Community Garden Kick-Off event which began the process of planting seeds of various fruits and vegetables to eventually be transferred into the Community Garden space at the Franklin Senior Center.
In addition and in coordination with other town projects, the Division of Senior Services has identified a senior walking program developed by the Arthritis Foundation called “Walk with Ease”. There are currently other projects being implemented within Franklin Borough to create not only a safe walking path, but an interactive walking trail. By bringing the “Walk with Ease” program to Franklin, the Division is focusing on continued community involvement with these new projects while ensuring a safe walking program for Franklin’s older adult community.
The program is supported by funding from Atlantic Health System as part of the New Jersey Healthy Communities Network.
