How do you determine what is important to a Community?
How do you determine what is important to a community? What is the most effect and efficient way to gather such information? How do you ensure a sufficient number of responses and what determines a sufficient number of responses, and finally, what is the best way to act upon those responses? These are all very important questions when creating a Community Health and Wellness Assessment.
The initial debate our team had was to determine what type of information were we truly looking to capture from our community members. Should we focus on health, education, diversity, socialization, all of the above…? We discovered all too quickly that this was probably going to be the most challenging part of the assessment! It took quite a bit of conversation, but we agreed that our focus should highlight emerging community diversity, as well as the health and well being of our adult special needs’ population.
Once our direction was confirmed, what then would be the most effective way to gather that information? It was agreed that the initial roll out would be in digital format, followed up by mass mailings and focus groups.
It has been a slow and tedious process, with many bumps in the road. We have been thrown off course too many times to count due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus, but we are not deterred. We are excited to present the assessment to the community and to fulfill those needs, to the best of our ability, to make the greatest impact.

The mission of the Nutley Health Department is to protect and enhance the health and the quality of life of Nutley residents through preventative activities, coordination of interagency efforts, and interventions designed to promote positive health behaviors. Health education and awareness is a vital component of the Health Department.
