Increasing physical activity with 3-on-3 Basketball
The Boys & Girls Club kicked off their 8 week, 3-on-3 basketball tournament this February. Youth were excited to pick teams and receive team jerseys for when they practice and play games. The coaches encourage players to take some ownership of the program and their teams by allowing them to pick team captains, format practices, and manage the team. Coaches also focus on skills such as ball handling, shooting, defense, and conditioning. The 3-on-3 basketball format allows each player to touch the ball more often and learn the game in a smaller group with increased self-confidence. 3-on-3 basketball is incorporated into the daily schedule in each after-school program site to promote physical activity. Youth have the opportunity to practice once or twice a week and then play against other teams on Friday. Once each site has had all their teams play against each other and a winning team has been crowned, winning teams will play against each other in the finals. Championship games are scheduled for late April.
