Mapping Food Distribution in Trenton
As mentioned in our previous blog, one of the current projects for the Trenton Food Stakeholders (TFS) is tracking and analyzing food distribution offerings, sites, and times. Since mid-March, Trenton Health Team (THT) has been maintaining a public list and map of food resources, updated daily, to help residents and organizations navigate new and changing pantry and food distribution operations. We are now in the process of moving this information into an interactive mapping tool that will allow users to filter by day, time, type of food, and eligibility. For example, a resident who could only access a food pantry on Friday afternoon would easily be able to find food distribution sites that meet their needs.
Our goal is to launch the new tool in early July when the Summer Meals Sites for youth 18 and under open. The City of Trenton, the Capital Area YMCA, and Mercer Street Friends operate the Summer Meal Sites throughout the city. The map helps organizations that run meal sites make sure that there is enough coverage around the city, and that their sites are well-situated relative to other sites, as there can be a cost to the organization if they run a site that is not fully utilized. THT is also using the map for more detailed analytics on gaps in food access that still remain.
Collaboration between organizations and communication throughout the community is vital during the summer months. This is even more important now due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty that it has created. The Trenton Food Stakeholders are working very hard to make sure that everyone has access to food throughout the summer and as the convener of the group we need to make sure that up to date information makes it out into the community.
