Meeting Residents’ Needs: Increasing Access for Healthy Eating and Active Living

As we move into longer summer days, City Green’s Veggie Mobile has begun making their weekly rounds at Bloomfield Public Library. The mobile produce market offers Bloomfield community a unique and fun shopping experience with quality produce (fresh fruits and vegetables) and a great service at an affordable price. Bloomfield Department of Health & Human Services (BDHHS) staff is present on-site to facilitate a process to register eligible consumers of the Veggie Mobile for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Ten-dollar veggie bucks are utilized as incentives to ensure that these consumers will indeed keep their appointment for SNAP screening. Additionally, consumers are also eligible for ten-dollar gift cards from either Shop-Rite, Stop & Shop, or Foodtown – located in different wards of Bloomfield to accommodate residents’ ease to access when seeking healthy food options in their neighborhood.

Bloomfield Community Garden (Millbank and Pulaski parks) continues with plans to increase access to gardeners who are differently abled via use of raised beds. All purchasing and installations to be completed by late summer to accommodate a late fall growing season of spinach, kale, cauliflower and garlic.

The Community Bike & Walk Program, an initiative launched by BDHHS in collaboration with Bloomfield Police and Parks & Recreation has wrapped up for the season. Currently BDHHS is in the process of evaluating this 12-week program so that opportunities for physical activity within Bloomfield remain viable to our community members. Based on evaluation results, BDHHS plans to jumpstart an improved/ enhanced community walking program for Fall 2021.
