Our small group of thoughtful, committed Finn’s residents and community stakeholders, a.k.a the “Healthy Finn’s Group”, have certainly brought about remarkable change in our little part of the world. We’ve been fortunate to be able to host a variety of events alongside our bi-monthly “Veggie Mobile” visits at Finn’s Mobile Home Park. We’ve also benefited from the generosity of our community partners. For example, Wayne’s YMCA, created a colorful and educational brochure to highlight the health benefits of the fruits and vegetables offered at the farmers market.

Some of the other collaborative ventures at the farmers markets include: Greater Bergen Community Action (GBCA) issuing Finn’s residents a survey. GCBA is a not-for-profit agency working to build more sustainable families and communities. The information provided by the residents will be used (as part of a larger study) to help plan and implement county-wide programs in the future. For each Finn’s resident, 65 or older, who participated in the survey, GBCA gave a $25 gift card.

At another farmers market, the Wayne Health Department nurses provided free blood pressure screenings along with health counseling. At another market, Chilton Medical Center offered free glucose and blood pressure screenings. During our last farmers market, Wayne Township’s health educator invited everyone to play a “healthy heart” game. The game came complete with a spinning wheel to keep participants on “their toes” and prizes of two dollar “veggie bucks” were given out for correct answers. We’re looking forward to our upcoming free vision and hearing screenings during our last few farmers markets.

Indeed, the possibilities for our thoughtful, committed “Healthy Finn’s Group” are endless…
