Park and Thrive Initiative
The North Bergen Health Department experienced a great opportunity given by the New Jersey Healthy Communities Network Grant that transformed an underused space and turn it into an outdoor gym, where people can go and exercise free of charge. In addition the NB Health Department is working in our new farmers market which will be situated adjacent to the North Bergen Township’s popular 64Th Street field next to the recreation department. Hosting this new initiative will provide residents with an affordable way to obtain locally fresh fruits and vegetables at a convenient location. We will also be able to conduct the farmers market indoors during inclement weather, including the cold winter months when farmers markets are not offered.
In addition to our new outdoor pocket park we are offering health and exercise updates, recipes and more in the form of a bimonthly bilingual newsletter. Overtime we envision drawing even greater attention to this project by hosting a broader range of health – based activities, such as pop-up clinics and programing focused on specific health risk and diseases such as diabetes, health disease and obesity. These events will reinforce the value of the Park and Thrive Initiative in helping our residents stay healthy
