Park and Thrive Initiative
The overarching goal of the Park and Thrive Initiative is to help our residents attain a healthy lifestyle. With the support from the New Jersey Healthy Community Network, the North Bergen Health Department implemented this project for the community. This free adult outdoor gym was strategically built in close proximity to many residents, senior housing, schools and public transportation. Current census track data indicates that the majority of properties in this area are renter occupied and over 75 percent of the population is economically disadvantaged. Many residents cannot afford a gym membership and other recreational programs that increase physical activity. Providing free outdoor exercise equipment will fill this gap and establish healthy habits. Pocket parks are usually used for passive recreation. This project will transform an under-utilized small area into a free outdoor gym.
