Park & Thrive Initiative

The North Bergen Health Departmentā€™s ā€œFriends & Family Farmers Marketā€ is continuing to make positive contributions in the township of North Bergen. Thanks to the New Jersey Healthy Community Network, an outdoor gym was strategically placed in a low-income housing complex. In addition, the Health Department took charge of hosting a monthly farmerā€™s market to ensure residents were able to receive fresh affordable fruits and vegetable close to home.

Good nutrition is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Good nutrition combined with physical activity can help reach or maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of diseases and improve your overall health. This initiative has not only promoted a healthy lifestyle, but also emphasizes on why physical exercise is important.

The North Bergen Health Department is making sure this initiative is properly advertised and ensuring our residents to take full advantage of our monthly ā€˜Friends and Family Farmerā€™s Marketā€™. Our previous event was like all the others, a success. We managed to sell the majority of our fruits and vegetables. Not to mention, many residents joined in on our free Zumba class and danced away for an hour! North Bergen residents were also given informative flyers on events that are occurring around the town.

Since the implementation of an outdoor gym, many individuals have been dedicated to their fitness goals. Although the cold season is approaching, that is not stopping some folks from getting their sweat on. Surrounded by multiple apartment complexes, individuals have an easy access to the gym to work on their physical fitness at any time!

Overall, this initiative continues to make a positive impact on the 60,000 plus residents of North Bergen. The ā€œFriends and Family Farmers Marketā€ goal has been improving the quality of life for residents of North Bergen, as well as educating the public on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. We are confident that these two implementations will have long lasting benefits for the community.
