Preparing for Farmers Market Season in the Winter Months
The start of the much-anticipated Wayne Farmers Market in June feels very far off now that February is upon us and the temperatures have plummeted. It would be great to fast-forward to summer so we can enjoy fresh produce and the sun on our faces once again.
But farmers have a lot to do before the Farmers Market opens in June to prepare for a successful season. According to an article on Whatcomtalk.com, a website in Washington, some of these tasks include:
- Prepping the greenhouse for early planting
- Placing seed and supply orders
- Daily tending to animals
- Researching new crops
- Business planning
- Infrastructure repairs
Mike Finger of Cedarville Farm echoed the sentiment that many other farmers shared – winter is for planning, maintenance and strategy. He adds, “There is a lot more number crunching than you realize. We also do crop planning and analyze what worked and what didn’t in the last year.”
So although it would seem that not much work happens for farmers in the winter, there are many important tasks needing to be accomplished so local farmers can bring their fresh produce to market for all of us to enjoy. We are looking forward to savoring the fruits of their labor in just five months!
Here in Wayne, the process of gathering all of the interested vendors and farmers who will be participating in Wayne Township’s Farmers Market has started. “We are thrilled with the amount of responses we are receiving,” says Cathy Scutti, Fitness & Wellness Director at the Wayne YMCA. “The pool of applicants is encouraging and we are looking forward to our first ever Farmers Market to begin this June.”
And that’s not all. In addition to the Farmers Market, regular meetings with the Director of Wayne Parks & Recreation have been focused on producing a guide to Wayne Parks, which will be distributed at the Farmers Market opening in June. Both of these ventures will aid in encouraging Wayne residents to eat better, get outside more often, and live healthier lives overall.
PLEASE NOTE: The Market Manager position for the Wayne Y’s Farmers Market position will be posted next month. However, interested and qualified applicants can contact Cathy Scutti, at the Wayne YMCA, email@example.com to express interest and for more information.
