Putting Theory Into Practice by Sean McCracken, Student Intern
I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in public health. I have been working as a student intern on Innovations Ministries’ Project Eden initiative since September 2019. The intent of Project Eden is to utilize physical activity as a means to eliminate social isolation among older adults, provide community service hours for high school students, bridge the inter-generational gap, and improve the physical health of the project’s participants.
The public health field is all about improving overall quality of life and making the world a healthier place to live. The reason why I am excited to be working on Project Eden is because it perfectly aligns with the mission of public health. When I joined the Project Eden Team, the project was transitioning from the assessment evaluation phase into developing a strategic plan for implementation. Project Eden provided a hands-on opportunity for me to learn the importance of designing an initiative focused on the needs of the community and ways to fulfill those needs. Working with community partners and making the needs of community members the chief priority, helps ensure Project Eden stays on track with making a positive impact on the lives of older adults living within the Lindenwold, New Jersey community.
Working on Project Eden has afforded me the opportunity to take the various theories and concepts I learned in the classroom and apply them to real world situations. My internship has provided me with a well-rounded education. By putting theory into practice, I have been able to expand upon my existing knowledge and further develop as a pubic health professional.
