Red APPLE, Red Wagon

The best way to meet with Bergen County Senior Services staff during warm summer days may be to go to a local farmers market. You may find us in Teaneck, Rutherford or Fair Lawn, just to name a few of the municipal farmers markets. We are there among the colorful stands of fresh produce, herbs and flowers, inhaling the aromas of prepared foods, and soaking in the sounds of people talking, laughing and absorbing a healthy dose of vitamin D.

For the 19 th consecutive year, we are bringing Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible seniors. Vouchers are exchanged for NJ grown fresh produce at local farmers markets. We also shopping and delivering bags filled with produce selected by the farmer to seniors who are unable to shop on their own, but who LOVE Jersey tomatoes, corn, blueberries…. and so much more!

Thanks to the APPLE Program, this year for the very 1st time, and hopefully not the last, many younger low-income residents of Bergen County, who are age 18-59 with a disability are also receiving a bag filled with NJ fresh produce. Along with a selection of farm fresh fruits and vegetables, we bring tips on shopping and storing these items, recipes using the ingredients in the delivered bag, and information on other useful resources.

We found great use for our red wagon. It is our version mobile farmers market during this unique times.

Barbara from Teaneck was delighted to see white, yellow and red tomatoes in her bag. Her tomatoes were going to end in a tomato salad, prepared according to the family recipe.
