Ridgefield’s 2nd Goal: Youth Center Healthy Options
The 2nd goal Ridgefield was hoping to accomplish with this grant, is to help offer some healthier choices in our Youth Center snack bar. Ridgefield’s Youth Center is for children 10 and up. Along with sponsoring trips to Broadway Plays, sporting events, the center is open every weekend and every summer night for children ages 10 to 18 to play ping pong, pool, board games, video games, and socializing with their peers. Part of hanging out, is the kids getting refreshments at the snack bar. Right now the menu is essentially candy, soda, quick meal fixes (pretzels, soup cups, chips), and ice cream. We are looking for ideas and strategies to get the kids to try healthier options without feeling they are being forced to give up their usual choices. Healthier vending machine option were a thought. Introducing snacks, such as, fruit on a sampler tray or getting the kids used to the healthier option is the goal. We want children to gravitate towards the healthier options even is some of the not so healthy options exist. Wish us luck and stay tuned!
