Strategies for Healthy Eating
Greetings from HomeFront! We have a lot of exciting things happening in our wellness program. As a result of our weekly salad bar, we have had a growing interest in finding more ways to achieve a healthy diet. In March amazing representatives from the SNAP-Ed program came to HomeFront’s Family Campus to prepare some healthy foods for a taste testing. They invited our residents (even our little ones!) to sample some delicious, healthy and budget friendly recipes. They asked for feedback which sparked a really productive conversation on different strategies for preparing healthy meals for our families. One of these strategies is to teach our little ones how to make healthy choices at an early age. We approach this challenge by offering our “Healthy Kids” cooking classes. Starting with our preschoolers, we talk about how to “Eat the Rainbow” and how to find interesting and fun ways to prepare fresh fruit and vegetable. We’ve also decided to let our preschooler take some ownership of our vegetable and herb garden – they love getting their hands dirty (literally) and learning about where foods come from. Goals for this summer are to create a walking trail and to offer our summer campers opportunities to learn about cooking and nutrition in our teaching kitchen. Be Well!

HomeFront’s mission is to end homelessness in Central New Jersey by harnessing the caring, resources and expertise of the community. We lessen the immediate pain of homelessness and help families become self-sufficient. We work to give our clients the skills and opportunities to ensure adequate incomes, and we work to increase the availability of adequate, affordable housing.
