Summer Meals, Summer Fun
The end of the school year came quickly but we accomplished a lot in the month of June. At School 8 we harvested lettuce, herbs, peppers, berries and tomatoes! We also spent time outside painting rocks to further beautify the garden. At School 17 we experimented with sprouting green beans and pea shoots in plastic bags. The students got to take home a bag and recorded the growth. We are looking forward to building a garden outside in the fall at School 17.
Although school is no longer in session, we are still focused on making sure the community has access to healthy food during the summer. We have been working closely with the Paterson Public School District, Paterson Recreation Department and the Passaic Food Policy Council to secure summer meal sites. We are happy to report that there are 34 sites serving breakfast and lunch to Paterson children under the age of 18. Eastside Park hosted a kick-off party where there was music, dancing, kickballs, a bouncy castle and of course food for the kids to enjoy. Please visit 211 for more information on site locations.
