Summertime Wellness at HomeFront’s Family Campus

The culture of wellness continues to improve at HomeFront’s Family Campus!  Wonderful Wednesdays are now a fixture here and the salad bar we began serving at lunchtime is offered at dinner time as well.  Green salad and fruit salad are now offered to residents on a daily basis and we are seeing a growing interest in nutrition education.

The weekly cooking classes offered in our teaching kitchen focus on budget friendly nutrition.  Our children are learning right along with the adults about the value of homemade, well balanced meals – we even have our preschoolers participating!  We have partnered with a local produce provider to teach the teens in our summer camp how to read food labels – what to look for and what to avoid.  The kids are learning to prepare simple nutritious snacks and meals.  In all of these programs we are incorporating herbs and produce from our own garden.

Our goal in the coming months is to increase opportunities for our families to learn about the benefits of nutritious eating and an active lifestyle.  We have medical practitioners coming on a regular basis to check blood pressure, weight and to discuss strategies for improved health.

A fitness trail circling our building has been a long time dream of ours.  We are currently looking into cost effective ways to make this happen – we will keep you posted!

Enjoy the rest of the summer and be well!
