Taking Big Steps
Staying active is the secret to being healthy, and walking is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get around. For many people, finding ways to take time to exercise is very difficult. Walking just 30 minutes a day can have a great impact on their overall health.
For this reason, in 2017, Shaping Dover started Dover Walks: a walking program where individuals meet outdoors and walk together. The goal of Dover Walks is to motivate the community to take advantage of the beautiful parks that the town of Dover has to offer while engaging in physical activity. Walking is a simple way to add exercise to our routine and, guess what? It’s fun! We are establishing relationships with peers, maintaining a healthy weight, preventing or managing various health conditions, strengthening our bones and muscles, and improving our mood, balance and coordination.
So far, Dover Walks has been a very successful activity. The people who attend have said that they feel much better physically and have started to walk more in their free time. The benefit of having Dover Walks outdoors is that Shaping Dover has been able to recruit new people from the community who did not know about our program and we are providing greater exposure to the local parks and trails. About the Grantee
Shaping Dover, a program of the Partnership for Maternal & Child Health of Northern NJ, is a community health initiative to improve the health of the people of Dover, New Jersey, by developing plans that focus on increasing physical activity and promoting healthy food choices. Our goal is to add healthy foods to the menus of restaurants and to encourage physical activities.
