THDC Walk Audit
On December 10th and 11th, 2020, Trenton Health Team (THT), in partnership with the Tri State Transportation Campaign (TSTC), conducted a walk audit in the Trenton Historic Development Collaborative (THDC) neighborhood of Trenton’s West Ward. We surveyed 11 intersections along West State Street, Calhoun Street, Bellevue Avenue, and Hermitage Avenue.
The AARP Walk Audit Tool Kit was used to assess the walkability of the sidewalks and streets. In particular, we examined the crossings and sidewalks, safety, driver behavior, and comfort and appeal at each intersection. Each aspect was rated as poor, fair, good, or excellent. The intersections were also given an overall rating. Common issues we encountered during the audit included, but were not limited to, faded and unmarked crosswalks, broken sidewalks, speeding, drivers not yielding to pedestrians, and litter.
In addition to the walk audit, project partner Isles conducted a park assessment of four parks in the THDC neighborhood. The parks include Carlos Negron Park, Wilkinson Park, Spring Street Park, and Edgewood Avenue Park. The assessment examined the amenities such as playground equipment, programming such as YMCA summer meals, and needs such as landscaping of each park.
We will report back our findings to the community at a public meeting early this spring, and we will also share them with the Trenton Complete Streets Steering Committee and individual City departments including Parks and Recreation, Public Works, and the Division of Planning. Community feedback and the results of the audits will help us work with the City to carry out improvements throughout the community, making the streets safer for everyone.
