What Goes Around

The beauty of collaborations – small investments in time or resources adding up to bigger impacts.

When we look back at all we have accomplished in the past few years since gratefully being awarded these mini grants, it is truly inspiring.  What began as a small farm stand on a street corner has now become two thriving urban micro-farms, where fresh organic produce is grown, youth farmers are taught how to farm, youngsters learn the importance of knowing where your food comes from, and staff and volunteers spend countless hours working the farm to help ensure a bountiful harvest.  Additionally, a neighborhood plot used for its tenant’s gardens was opened up to the community to encourage even more people to grow their own vegetables.

What does a community do with all this extra produce?  At harvest time, community gardeners turn the fruits of their labor into healthy meals for their families.  Older adults in Montclair and surrounding towns are delighted when Montclair Community Farms’ Mobile Farm Stand pulls up to their doorstep with just picked produce grown right here in town, often filling a bag with veggies for just a few dollars.  Some of the produce is sold at low cost to a food pantry, ensuring that their patrons also have healthy options in their cache of foods.  You may see a special item on the menu of a local restaurant, indicating that some ingredients were grown at our farms.  Montclair Shop Healthy, a previous corner store grant project, also benefits from any surplus by store owners being provided with organic veggies to sell at their stores, encouraging their customers to eat healthier.

Our desire to encourage healthier behaviors is deeply rooted in our souls, and in our gardens.  We are thankful to be at the forefront of these efforts.
