Isles has the pleasure of operating our T-Recs mobile recreation vehicle, a retrofitted bread truck filled with recreation equipment that provides physical activity and social engagement opportunities to the Trenton community. Our goal is to build a sense of community, get kids physically active and let them know that it is okay to just have fun. It has been amazing to see them with huge smiles as they play games and build friendships. Through this program, many young lives have been touched.
This January, Isles began bringing T-Recs services to the Donnelly Homes after school program every Wednesday. It has become a huge success with the kids that live there. They even have a name for our Wednesday activities. They call it “Wonderful Wednesday”.
During our visits, one child in particular stood out. On our first visit to Donnelly Homes, a young boy was sitting by himself. He wouldn’t interact with any one until we walked over to him and began a conversation, “My name is Brian,” he said, “I just moved here, and I don’t have any friends around here.” We told him that we would be his friends on Wednesdays, and he began to refer to us as “friends.” Now he is the first to start playing with the other kids. Last Wednesday we asked him about the new friends he has made. He replied, “I have you and everyone in this program”. Thank goodness for Wonderful Wednesdays!
