A Labor of Love

It’s amazing to see the impact the “Just For You Program” is having on the seniors we serve. One of my responsibilities is to call the seniors to remind them to pick up their monthly produce the next day. I enjoy talking with them. Each call is an opportunity to connect with a senior and hear about their family and how their day went. It lets them know someone cares about them.

I always get so excited prepping for produce distribution day that I start packing two weeks ahead of time. I try to choose fruits and vegetables the seniors will enjoy. We provide a recipe that includes a produce item they receive. I cook and sample the recipes at home. It makes for great conversation on distribution day.

I look forward to seeing our seniors when we distribute their produce. One month we provided bags of fresh peanuts along with the produce. Who knew peanuts would be such a big hit? I enjoy making distribution day special for our seniors.

We also conduct monthly conference calls on various health and nutrition topics. This provides another means to reduce social isolation among our seniors. Conference calls are interactive and the seniors actively participate on the calls.

The seniors are so appreciative for the produce, recipes and literature, bi-weekly comfort calls (robocalls) to encourage them, conference calls and “Letters of Love” (cards, letters, drawings and birthday cards) they receive from children in the youth mentorship program we partnered with. Those who signed up for the “Letters of Love” program are elated when they arrive to pick up their produce and I announce, “You have a letter of love this month.” Their excitement encourages other seniors to sign up for the program.

I’m grateful to be able to make a difference and bring joy into the lives of our seniors. I look forward to calling and seeing them as much as they look forward to the calls and seeing our staff on distribution day. It takes a lot of work pulling all of the pieces together each month. But it’s truly a labor of love for me.
