A New School Year of Active Living
The 2019-2020 school year has begun with expanded yoga classes, Tai Chi, and meditation sessions. This year we have added a midday physical activity session for employees who cannot attend classes after work, or who just want a change to unwind and refresh. The sessions, which we refer to as pop-up classes because we hold them whenever we can gain access to a large multi-purpose room, can occur as many as 5 days some weeks, some weeks only twice. Comprised of videos that run from 5 to 40 minutes, the sessions offer an opportunity for employees to come for just one activity, such as tai chi, or stay for all classes that take place in that hour-long session. We began to offer these classes during the summer, as an experiment to see if employees would be receptive to video-led classes as opposed to instructor-led, and were surprised at the number of participants, as well as the positive reactions we received. Over the course of the school year, we hope to expand the idea to other campuses throughout the district.
