EZ Ride’s Health Promotion at Long Branch’s West End Beach Hut

Going “down the shore” has long been a summer staple for people of all walks of life in New Jersey. EZ Ride’s Bike & Pedestrian team returned to the Long Branch boardwalk at the city’s request to make sure beachgoers got educated on health and to promote healthy eating and the beach hut’s healthy choices menu! Our team set up a tent on the boardwalk next to our partners, Monmouth Medical Center and the West End Beach Hut, and got our materials ready to distribute. We were able to reach out to a diverse population in terms of age, ethnicity, and health needs during both of our events on June 26 and July 28 with 80 participants at each event. Our visitors overall were excited and grateful that our team came in partnership with the West End Beach Hut, Monmouth Medical Center, the City of Long Branch, NJ HCN, and the NJ Department of Health to engage with the community about healthy eating.

This summer was particularly hot and EZ Ride’s Team adjusted accordingly to provide beach and boardwalk patrons with information about to heat stroke in addition to all of our typical material pertaining to health such as recipes, how to read a food label, and about healthy snacks, sugar, salt, and drink choices. We also provided visitors to our health table with healthy food samples! Steve Xanthacos from the Beach Hut made roasted veggies for us to sample to people who visited our table, and we had sugarless hibiscus tea for tasting as well. Redeemable coupons were distributed for a cold bottle of water and fresh fruit cups containing grapes, berries, and watermelon. We distributed a total of 160 coupons at the two events.

Since last summer, we have seen positive increases in several measurable fields. We were able to distribute 100% of our coupons at both events, and saw significant increases in food/drink samples distributed (18% more) as well as blood pressure screenings (64% more). We are hoping that the work that has been done with the beach huts as well as in schools and other local businesses continues and creates a sustainable healthy community in Long Branch!
