Finding Better Health at your Local Park – Healthier Wayne
When was the last time you met the guidelines for physical activity on a regular basis? If you are an adult living in the United States, the answer is probably not lately, or even worse, NEVER!
In 2013, the CDC estimated that nearly 80 percent of adult Americans do not get the recommended amounts of physical activity each week. This lack of regular physical activity has contributed significantly to our ballooning rates of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
There are a number of barriers that adults typically identify when they are trying to exercise regularly, including lack of time, affordability and access. The Wayne YMCA is working with Wayne Township’s Departments of Health and Parks & Recreation to help local residents overcome a few of those barriers by helping them to find and use their local parks for physical activity.
With 23 community parks already documented, our Healthier Wayne collaborative is focused on getting the word out to Wayne residents about their neighborhood parks, and ways they can use these community resources for physical activity. The team is visiting each park in Wayne and creating a guide to the parks system that includes a physical activity rating scale for each park, and ideas for using park resources to create easy exercise circuits. The guide is but one strategy to make residents aware of the benefits of physical activity, while providing them with simple ideas for fitting in 150 minutes of physical activity using a neighborhood resource.
Once complete, the guide will be distributed to residents, and promoted through a series of proposed events, including a township-wide fitness challenge using local parks, a Why I Love My Park essay contest, and a social media campaign that encourages residents to visit and use Wayne Township parks and post about their fun physical activity.
