Fitness and Nutrition at HomeFront Family Campus

Happy Holidays to everyone!  It was such a pleasure to attend the Building a Culture of Health in New Jersey Conference on Wednesday!  I attended a workshop that gave me some great ideas on how to make sure that we take good care of our staff so that they are, in turn, able to continue to provide good care to our clients.  As I mentioned in my last blog post, we have begun offering yoga to our residents.  We have decided to extend this program to staff as well.  We are working hard to make sure we are all – staff and clients – embracing the efforts made to finding ways to live a healthier life.  Our weekly salad bar continues to be a high point of the week – as with the yoga, we are encouraging staff to take part as well.  We are learning that our steps towards building a healthier community are only successful when we all take them together.

We are always looking for ways to work on cooking skills for families living on a very tight budget.  As one of our weekly cooking classes, we now offer a class called “The Pantry Challenge”.  We stock our teaching kitchen with items for our food pantry – items that our families typically bring home in a food bag.  The goal of the class is to start building a stock pile of quick, easy recipes that can be made with items in your pantry while keeping in mind the components needed for a healthy meal.  As you can imagine, this is definitely easier said than done, but our clients have come up with some amazing and creative ideas!
