From An Idea to Reality

To us, an organization that helps provide people with more opportunities is something scarce and not easily attainable, yet Family Promise has achieved just that. We decided becoming involved with Family Promise was something we wanted to do, and we began by volunteering to watch children while their parents were in workshops. It was on one of these days we were volunteering and watching the children make piggy banks that a volunteer coordinator told us about a grant given to Family Promise that aimed to help families obtain a healthier lifestyle. The coordinator brought up the idea of a map with walking paths around various churches affiliated with Family Promise, and we immediately thought, “This would be a great app for the families!” We discussed this idea of an app with the coordinators, and we all agreed it was a brilliant idea. Our goal is to make this idea a reality.
We began to plan the app immediately after, brainstorming what the app would look like and what it would entail. We agreed that the goal of the app would be to give the families a platform to easily access tools to aid them in a healthier lifestyle. Our first step was to create walking paths that would be accessible for both the parents and the children affiliated with Family Promise. These paths not only include three different difficulties, ranging from easy to difficult, but also provide rest stops and parks that can be used for the leisure of the families. There are various walking paths available for every town affiliated with Family Promise, so the families have a plethora of choices. In addition to these walking paths, the app will include so much more. With the help of Crossfit in Summit, NJ, the app will also provide its users with stretches and workout plans that the families can do inside the church or by themselves. We are still in the early stages of this app, and we are excited to see the app come to life!
The program is supported by funding from Atlantic Health System as part of the New Jersey Healthy Communities Network.
