Fueling Physical Activity

While healthy eating trainings, taste-testing workshops and gardening programs have been the focus for members of the Boys & Girls Club of Clifton, recent attention has been focused on physical activity—especially since virtual learning can mean a minimum of 4-5 hours in front of a computer screen.  Thanks to our funder, Partners For Health Foundation, the Club was able to purchase a Cubii Jr. as an initial “step” towards making kids move without having to leave their desks. Cubii Jr. is a compact elliptical machine that was designed to be used as an under the desk workout tool. Students (and Staff) can move their legs and pedal without standing up or leaving their desks. It is exercising, while seated. A digital monitor tracks time, calories burned, strides pedaled and distance traveled. While each grade has a specific gym schedule to burn off pent up energy in the after school time, Cubii Jr. allows for additional time exercising, and kids often exceed the one hour of active physical activity recommended by the Alliance For a Healthier Generation.

After a gym, gardening, dance or yoga workout, or a day’s work, what better way to quench one’s thirst than a bottle of cool, filtered water that is free! Again, thanks to Partners For Health Foundation, the Club purchased water bottle filling stations that are vandal-resistant, ADA compliant and enhances sustainability by minimizes our dependency on disposable plastic bottles.
