Harvest Time at Hamilton Elementary School!
The 5th grade students at Hamilton Elementary School in Harrison, NJ were hard at work in the hydroponic system this Spring! Students did an amazing job monitoring and adjusting both the nutrient and pH levels of the system during their weekly KidsFit classes. And boy did they have produce to show for all their hard work! The 5th graders grew and harvested basil, spinach and kale during their KidsFit class. Our biggest problem: no leftovers! Students gobbled up all the greens as they showed off their cooking skills making 3 recipes: Herb & White Bean Hummus, Basil Pesto Dip and a Tropical Green Smoothie. All recipes went home with students to help engage their families with what we are doing in the classroom. Their favorite recipe, the Tropical Green Smoothie, is posted here for you all to try!
One of our champion fifth grade teachers couldn’t leave the hydroponic system empty for the rest of school year so she is working with her science students and they are growing hydroponic strawberries that should be ready to taste just in time for graduation! Passionate teacher’s are always the key to successful health initiatives in the schools, we couldn’t do it without them!
