Serving the Physcially Disabled with Accessible Solutions to Wellness
COVID-19 is changing our lives and willingly sending people outdoors to recreate. While our original project was focused on indoor fitness accessibility, we are now finding need to evaluate and share outdoor, accessible options.
We have learned about Pathway Accessibility Solutions, Inc. (pathVu). This organization is committed to improving walkability, accessibility, and safety along sidewalks. Their vision is for pedestrian pathways, sidewalks, and trails to be completely walkable/accessible so that all people — of any ability — have full and safe access to every public and private pedestrian path. Improved accessibility is associated with improved safety. With a mix of engineering-grade hardware and innovative crowdsourcing tools we pathVu is developing a worldwide sidewalk network to ultimately improve happiness, health, and safety.
The Raritan Valley YMCA is interested in working with pathVu to develop a web map application of pathways, trails, points of interest, and similar features to help pedestrians in the region understand the safe and accessible routes to travel. We seek to add a nutrition component as well. More to come!
The idea is for pathVu to build a web map application for public consumption that will allow users to understand the best routes to travel and location of points of interest. If we go forward, pathVu will provide two URLs to access the web map application, one for public consumption and one for Client editing. The web map will include up to six layers of data, such as pathway segments, curb ramp locations, points of interest, and suggested routes.
The Raritan Valley YMCA is proud to represent the New Healthy Communities Network and our funder, the NJ Division of Disability Services, as we continue our innovative grant work. Check it out at pathvu.com!
