The Benefits of April Showers
All of the rain in North Jersey has helped keep our plants happy and healthy. Our lettuce, leeks and swiss chard are growing beautifully and it’s becoming increasingly harder to resist sampling. Additionally, the bulbs that we planted in the winter have started to bloom adding more color to our garden.
Although the rain has forced us to stay indoors on certain days, we still had fun. We expanded on last months “Go, Grow, Glow” lesson and learned about the specific benefits of certain foods in relation to particular parts of our body. We ended the lesson by making yogurt parfaits with ingredients that benefited our stomach, brain, heart and bones. We also sorted various seeds and made “seed balls” for a protein-packed snack.
Lastly, we used the rain as a perfect opportunity to learn about the water cycle. Each student drew a diagram of the water cycle on a plastic bag, filled it with some water then placed it on a sunny window to observe the various stages.
We are excited for more planting as the weather gets warmer!
