The Third Gardening Season: Fall
Students at Redwood Elementary in W. Orange are learning about the third gardening season: fall. They are raising cold weather plants such as radishes, spinach, and kale. Many students were surprised to see their plants survived after NJ’s coldest weather this year, which occurred on the day after Thanksgiving. Temperatures were in the 20s. The spinach suffered a few frozen leaves, but was largely left intact. The kale thrived.
The students are also learning about the nutritional value of kale and spinach, which offer calcium and iron. They are rich in Vitamin A, which is important to skin and eyes.
