The Trenton Bike Share/Library
In August 2020, THT received an AARP Community Challenge grant to pilot a community bicycle sharing program based in the city’s West Ward. THT is partnering with Trenton Cycling Revolution and Boys and Girls Club of Mercer County to implement the program this fall.
This pilot program will include three or four sites offering a set of bicycles, adaptive cycles and adult tricycles from the Boys and Girls Club Bike Exchange for community residents of all abilities, especially older adults. THT will work with each site to create a process for borrowing and monitoring the bikes. As the program gets underway this fall, THT and partners including Trenton Cycling Revolution will share safe biking route maps, as well as host bike safety workshops and a community ride. A few of the bikes were available for use at Trenton’s second annual Ciclovia on Saturday, September 21st and they were very well received.
This pilot program will align nicely with the work we have planned in the neighborhood as part of our NJHCN project, which includes an active living and bike audit in the THDC neighborhood. This audit will help inform other planning activities that are currently taking place in the neighborhood. Issues and priorities highlighted in the 2011 THDC Neighborhood Plan included safety, physical improvements, and recreation. Long-term recommendations called for improvements to the D&R Canal and Belvidere Greenway and increased recreational options.
Both projects will set the stage for a citywide conversation about expanding bike programs, improving the D&R Canal and enhancing street safety for pedestrians and cyclists. We are very excited to receive the grant from AARP and the synergy with our NJHCN project. As the bike share program gets off the ground this fall we will share an update in a future blog.
