Victory Garden & so much more….
Work continues on our Victory Garden. The volunteers have remained committed to this project in order to have it ready for the spring. AHS Environmental Club put in three purple rhododendrons to soft mark one side of the eventual periphery on the non-fence side. They hung a bird box and started clearing the garden side, roughly a 20’ wide arc along the backfield fence. On Saturday, December 5th, they will be covering roughly 2,000 square feet with road cloth. Saturday, December 12th, they are planning to get 3/8” crushed grey stone to cover the road cloth to about 1 ½” to smother and block Japanese Knotweed and other growth from coming back. Assistance is needed from a plot surveyor to help with the property lines for the install of a fence. Assistance will also be needed from the Public Works Department to grind 2-3 remaining stumps. Their anticipated grand opening is the third week in April 2021, Earth Day, assuming all goes according to plan.
The grand opening ceremony for our new Rec Center was a social distancing success in October. We are very excited about all the potential that building holds for future healthy and active living for our community. On the short list is the purchase of a mommy-and-me swing with much more to come.
We hit a few speed bumps with our food bank strategic plan as far as volunteers and available time, but we will continue to press forward to work through all obstacles.
Despite all of our challenges and stressors in 2020, our volunteers have remained committed to the mission as best they can! We look forward to a better and even more productive new year!
