Westbrook Gardening Team is Moving Outside!
The Westbrook Elementary Garden Program is due to expand this spring! Inside of the classroom, winter sprouts have been repotted and are flourishing despite the casual nibbles of fourth grade students, and outside plans are underway for a new 15’ x 25’ fenced garden. Now that the last of the March snow has finally thawed the Westbrook Elementary Garden Program coordinators were able to meet with the West Milford Public School Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds and West Milford Health Department to finalize plans for installation of the fenced garden. The garden will include 6 foot fences to reduce grazing from local fauna, pea gravel for weed control, and several raised straw bale beds for growing vegetables. The garden will provide several different areas for growing as well as instruction, and will be installed adjacent to the outdoor classroom. Everyone is looking forward to getting their hands dirty this spring!
This program is supported by funding from Atlantic Health System as part of the New Jersey Healthy Communities Network.
About the Grantee
We are a small local health department located in one of the largest (in land size) municipalities in New Jersey, the rural Northern Passaic County town of West Milford. Environmental health is a high priority for West Milford residents as the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act charges West Milford residents with protecting the water that supplies much of Northern NJ.
