When Hindsight is 2020
The year 2020 has been filled with opportunity, particularly to adapt and overcome! As we look back over the course of the last year, and reread past blog entries, it is clear that remaining flexible and clearly communicating roadblocks encountered is key to making the most of what has been a challenging situation for everyone.
When it became clear that our project would not be doable as a result of COVID-19 we continuously adapted the various planned activities so we could still achieve the intended impact. The most recent adaptation was retooling our method for providing food vouchers. Originally we had planned to distribute food vouchers for 30 individuals and/or families, as well as direct transportation to our summer Farmer’s Market where the vouchers could be used for fresh fruits and vegetables. COVID made transportation a hurdle too high and too costly to overcome. The solution was to work with our funder NJDOH and NJHCN coach, Lisa Gulla, to propose a reallocation of those resources.
This resource reallocation allowed us to provide over 400 food gift cards to directly support the 200+ individuals and families we have been providing weekly direct food assistance to since the early days of the pandemic. These food gift cards supplemented the 216,811 pounds of shelf stable food and fresh produce in nearly 1000 boxes or bags we have distributed. Combined this represents over 186,000 meals provided since April. This represents a far greater healthy eating reach and impact than we ever imagined in year one of our original project.
As we say goodbye to 2020 and look hopefully to 2021, we wish to thank the NJDOH, NJHCN and our coach for your support and willingness to help us adapt and overcome during this unprecedented year. Hindsight is indeed 2020.
