Grantee Blog 2020

The Township of Nutley Health Department, in partnership with the Nutley Board of Education and the Nutley Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce plans for “Worktoberfest”. A job fair for the special needs community of Nutley.

The Nutley Board of Education currently has a program in place for students aged 18-21, that teaches daily life skills, as well as basic employment skills. This is a fantastic program, and so desperately needed, unfortunately, once these students age out of the program, there is little in town to keep them busy and learning until such time as they qualify for state programs at the age of 25. Our mission is to bridge that gap with additional services, programs, events, etc. to assist both these individuals and their families.

Recently a group of education professionals, civic leaders and concerned citizens convened to form a committee to assist us with our mission. It was unanimously agreed upon that a Career Day for the special needs community should be our first initiative. We have secured the Nutley VFW Post 493 on Saturday, October 16, 2021 from 10:00am – 2:00pm, to connect these particular members of our community with local business owners who can assist them with employment/volunteer opportunities within, and possibly outside of, the township.

We are also exploring a partnership with the Township of Nutley’s Community Garden to assist with the construction of a handicap accessibility as well as raised beds for wheelchair bound community members.
