Most strategies being implemented under the Community Grants Program meet certain criteria:
- The focus is on policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change to support long-term, sustainable community change, rather than changing individuals’ behaviors through periodic events, programs or educational activities that end without continued funding (although such activities can complement PSE change efforts).
- Research has demonstrated that these strategies create the conditions in communities to enable sustained behavior change, that is, increased physical activity and increased consumption of healthy foods and beverages.
In addition, recognizing the impact on health of social determinants, a limited number of grantees are working to improve access to healthy food and opportunities for physical activity through such factors as safety, transportation options, housing, and community-connectedness.
